Our client requires a data architect to lead the design and implementation of enterprise data architecture and integration solutions across regulatory, environmental, geospatial, and cloud data platforms. Responsibilities include establishing data models, integration patterns, governance frameworks, and data quality standards while leveraging Databricks, Azure cloud technologies, APIs, ETL/ELT processes, and geospatial data platforms to deliver trusted, secure, and reusable data. Success in this role requires working closely with business stakeholders, architects, developers, data engineers, and agile delivery teams to transform complex business requirements into scalable, governed, and high-performing data solutions.

Resource will work remotely. Standard Hours of work are 08:15 – 16:30 Alberta time. Work must be done from within Canada, due to network and data security issues.

Responsibilities

• Define and maintain the target-state data architecture for integrating regulatory, environmental, and geospatial data across Databricks-based data platforms, geospatial platforms, and enterprise applications.
• Design conceptual, logical, and physical data models, establish integration patterns including batch, near-real-time, event-driven, API-based, and change data capture, and architect lakehouse structures using Databricks, Delta Lake, Spark, and Unity Catalog.
• Lead the design of data pipelines, interfaces, data contracts, API specifications, and interface agreements; resolve complex integration issues involving data quality, schema changes, latency, and system dependencies.
• Embed data governance practices including metadata management, data lineage, data classification, master and reference data management, data quality rules, validation frameworks, monitoring approaches, and role-based access controls aligned with security, privacy, and records management requirements.
• Work with business areas, product owners, enterprise architecture, cybersecurity teams, data engineers, developers, and GIS specialists to translate business and regulatory processes into data requirements, architecture documentation, diagrams, decision records, and actionable user stories within an agile delivery environment.
• Serve as a trusted data architecture advisor, provide technical leadership and mentorship, promote data architecture best practices, and ensure alignment with enterprise standards, cloud data platform roadmaps, geospatial data standards, and strategic program objectives

Mandatory Requirements

• College or Bachelor degree in Computer Science or a related field of study.
• 8 years’ experience designing, planning, implementing and supporting enterprise solution databases in an enterprise IT environment (preferably public sector).
• 8 years’ experience documenting enterprise solution databases in an environment equivalent in size and complexity to the Government of Alberta.
• 6 years’ experience in performing threat and risk assessments and presenting recommendations for risk mitigation to senior management.
• Experience providing leadership, planning, estimating, and presentations of ideas and solutions.
• 8 years’ experience with enterprise architecture principles and associated best practices, methods, standards, tools, policies, and processes.
• 8 years’ experience working as a Data Architect in an enterprise IT environment (preferably public sector).

Desirable Requirements

• Certification in The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF).
• 5 years’ experience designing and implementing enterprise architecture database plans and models that help align an organization’s data, information or technology with its required business capabilities in a large enterprise IT environment (preferably public sector).
• 4 years’ experience in using a tool for architecture models such as: PowerDesigner, ER Studio, Er-win, BPwin, Rational Rose.
• 4 years’ experience project managing application development projects using Agile sprint development.
• 5 years’ experience with cloud computing or big data platforms and infrastructure.
• 4 years’ experience with enterprise business intelligence and performance management products. Specifically Cognos BI Suite, Microsoft SQL Server Services, MS Power BI (Query, View) or MicroStrategy.
• 4 years’ experience working as a Data Architect designing and implementing enterprise database solutions within an enterprise IT organization (preferably public sector).
• 5 years’ experience working with developing SQL databases.
• 5 years’ experience working with implementing a SQL data warehouse.
• 5 years’ experience working with querying data with Transact-SQL.
• 5 years prior experience with public sector is considered a strong asset.
